Badshah Tateeree Song Row: Haryana Women’s Panel Orders Police Action After Rapper Skips Hearing

The controversy surrounding rapper Badshah’s song Tateeree intensified on Friday after the Haryana State Commission for Women directed the police to take action against the singer for failing to appear before the panel. The commission had summoned Badshah to personally attend a hearing in Panipat and respond to complaints alleging that the song and its visuals contained objectionable content.

Commission chairperson Renu Bhatia had asked the rapper to appear before officials by 3 pm. However, when Badshah did not show up at the scheduled time, the commission instructed police authorities in Panipat and Panchkula to initiate appropriate legal action. Officials also indicated that authorities could seize the singer’s passport if necessary to ensure he does not travel abroad while the investigation is ongoing.

Instead of Badshah appearing in person, a legal team representing the rapper attended the hearing. His lawyers informed reporters that the artist was unable to be present because of professional commitments and certain security concerns. They requested the commission to grant additional time and suggested that Badshah could participate in the proceedings through video conferencing.

The commission, however, rejected the request. Officials maintained that the notice clearly required the rapper to appear personally and that his presence was necessary given the seriousness of the allegations raised in the complaints.

The controversy began earlier this month after the release of the music video Tateeree. Soon after its launch, several social organisations and activists in Haryana raised objections, claiming that the song portrayed women in a disrespectful manner. Critics pointed specifically to visuals in the video showing girls dressed in school uniforms dancing inside a Haryana Roadways bus and making gestures that many considered inappropriate.

Following the complaints, police registered cases in Panchkula and Jind. The growing backlash led to the removal of the video from YouTube. The issue quickly gained attention on social media, with community groups and activists demanding strict action against the rapper.

Amid the criticism, Badshah released a video statement on social media apologising to the people of Haryana. In his message, he said he never intended to offend anyone and expressed regret if the song or its visuals had hurt sentiments. Despite the apology, several community groups and khap panchayats have continued to demand stronger action and have called for a ban on the song.

Authorities say the investigation into the matter is ongoing. With legal complaints already filed and the women’s commission closely monitoring developments, the case is expected to remain under scrutiny in the coming days.
