West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose has resigned after serving three and a half years in office, bringing an unexpected end to his tenure at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata. The resignation was submitted in Delhi on Thursday, according to officials. Speaking briefly after stepping down, Bose said, “I have spent enough time at Governor’s office,” signaling a calm but firm conclusion to his constitutional role in the state.

The development immediately sparked political reactions across West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and deep concern over the sudden move. She revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed her that R. N. Ravi would replace Bose as the new Governor of West Bengal. Banerjee stated that she was unaware of the reasons behind the resignation but hinted that, given the prevailing political climate, she would not be surprised if pressure had been exerted ahead of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. She emphasized that such developments, if politically driven, could undermine the spirit of cooperative federalism and weaken the constitutional balance between the Centre and the states.
C. V. Ananda Bose was appointed as West Bengal Governor by Droupadi Murmu on November 17, 2022. Born in Mannanam in Kerala’s Kottayam district, Bose comes from a distinguished family background. His father, PK Vasudevan Nair, was a freedom fighter. Bose completed his early education in Kerala and later earned a Ph.D. from BITS Pilani. Over the decades, he built a reputation as both an administrator and a prolific writer. He authored around 350 publications, including nearly 70 books covering novels, short stories, and poetry in Malayalam, Hindi, English, and Bengali. His tenure in West Bengal was marked by active engagement in constitutional matters and periodic differences with the state government.
His likely successor, RN Ravi, brings with him decades of administrative and security experience. Born on April 3, 1952, in Patna, Ravi joined the Indian Police Service in 1976 after a short career in journalism. During his service, he worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Intelligence Bureau. In 2014, he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, and in October 2018, he became Deputy National Security Advisor. After retirement, Ravi served as Governor of Nagaland from August 2019 to September 2021 and also held additional charge as Governor of Meghalaya. He later took oath as the Governor of Tamil Nadu in September 2021.
The timing of Bose’s resignation has drawn particular attention as West Bengal moves closer to the 2026 Assembly elections. Governors play a crucial constitutional role in legislative processes, law and order assessments, and potential political crises. A leadership change at Raj Bhavan during such a politically sensitive phase inevitably fuels speculation and debate.

While no detailed official explanation has been issued regarding the resignation, the development marks a significant moment in Bengal’s administrative landscape. Bose’s departure closes a chapter defined by literary scholarship, bureaucratic experience, and a tenure that often intersected with intense political currents. With RN Ravi expected to assume charge soon, all eyes will now be on how the relationship between Raj Bhavan and the West Bengal government evolves in the months ahead.
