A routine airport drop turned into a tense standoff at Kempegowda International Airport after a woman passenger accused a cab driver of refusing to return her luggage over a fare dispute.

The incident occurred on February 21, 2026, when the woman booked a cab through Rapido for her journey from Sarjapur to the airport. According to her complaint, the ride was confirmed at a fixed fare displayed on the app. She expected a smooth drop before her flight. Instead, the situation escalated the moment the vehicle reached the airport premises.
The woman alleged that the driver demanded additional payment beyond the amount shown in the app. When she refused to pay more than the confirmed fare, an argument broke out. She further claimed that the driver, identified as Nagesh, refused to hand over her luggage bag, leaving her distressed and under pressure as departure time approached.
With limited options and concerned about missing her flight, she approached the Kempegowda Airport Police Station and filed a formal complaint. Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered based on her statement and that inquiries are currently underway.
However, the driver has narrated a different version of events. Nagesh claimed that the total travel distance was around 55 kilometres and that the applicable government-approved fare amounted to ₹985 plus toll charges. According to him, the fare shown on the Rapido app was lower than the official rate calculated as per meter-based regulations.
He maintained that he was operating a meter taxi and that fares are determined strictly by distance as per government norms. The driver stated that he merely asked the passenger to pay the legally applicable amount. When she refused, he said he withheld the luggage and called the police himself.
Nagesh also alleged that app-based cab aggregators often display fares that do not match official taxi meter rates, causing financial losses to drivers. He has indicated that he is prepared to present his case in court if necessary.

Police officials have stated that they are verifying booking records, fare details, distance travelled, and toll charges before reaching any conclusion. The investigation is ongoing.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing friction between app-based fare systems and traditional government-approved taxi rates. For passengers, the app-displayed amount represents a confirmed commitment. For drivers, government meter rules may tell a different story. When the two do not align, disputes like this can quickly escalate — especially in high-pressure settings such as airport transfers.
For now, authorities continue to examine the facts. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
