Nokia Unveils World’s Largest Fixed Network R&D Facility in Chennai, Expands Investment to 270 Crore

Finnish telecom giant Nokia has inaugurated its world’s largest research and development facility for fixed networks in Chennai, marking a major boost for Tamil Nadu’s growing reputation as a global telecom and deep-tech hub. The new facility, located at SIPCOT Siruseri, underscores Nokia’s long-term commitment to India’s technology ecosystem and high-end engineering talent.

Nokia Unveils World’s Largest Fixed Network R&D Facility in Chennai, Expands Investment to ₹270 Crore

The expansion follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Nokia and the Tamil Nadu government during Chief Minister M K Stalin’s visit to the United States in August 2024. What began as a strategic promise has now taken shape as a concrete investment on the ground, reinforcing investor confidence in the state’s industrial policies.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa confirmed that Nokia has increased its first phase of investment to ₹270 crore from the initially planned ₹220 crore. The newly inaugurated R&D centre has already created more than 200 high-skilled jobs, with further employment opportunities expected as the project advances.

The Siruseri facility will serve as Nokia’s largest fixed network R&D laboratory globally and is set to become a major international test bed for next-generation broadband technologies. The centre will focus on innovations in 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G optical networks, fixed wireless access solutions, and other advanced fixed network technologies that are critical to the future of global digital connectivity.

According to the state government, Nokia’s second phase of expansion is expected to involve an additional investment of around ₹300 crore. This expansion is likely to further strengthen Chennai’s position as a preferred destination for global telecom research, product development, and advanced network engineering.

The investment also reflects the success of Tamil Nadu’s industry-friendly environment, skilled workforce, and strong infrastructure support. Officials noted that such projects not only generate high-value employment but also position the state as a key contributor to global technology innovation.

With this facility, Nokia is expected to play a central role in developing and testing broadband technologies that will be deployed worldwide. The Chennai R&D centre will support global operations, reinforcing India’s role in shaping next-generation fixed network solutions for both emerging and developed markets.

Industry observers believe the development signals growing confidence among multinational technology firms in India’s engineering capabilities and long-term growth potential. As global demand for high-speed, reliable digital networks increases, investments like Nokia’s are expected to further integrate India into the global telecom innovation value chain.
