LUCKNOW: A group of students at Lucknow University staged a protest on Monday against the University Grants Commission’s newly notified equity regulations, raising concerns that the framework could lead to discrimination and disturb the academic atmosphere on campus.

The protesting students gathered within the university premises, voicing apprehension over the possible misuse of the new rules. While acknowledging the need to address caste-based discrimination in higher education, they argued that the regulations could result in unequal treatment if implemented without adequate safeguards.
The University Grants Commission had notified the new framework on January 13 with the stated objective of preventing caste-based discrimination in colleges and universities. Under the regulations, institutions have been directed to establish special equity committees, dedicated helplines, and monitoring teams to handle complaints, particularly from students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
According to the UGC, the measures are intended to promote fairness, accountability, and a safer academic environment. The commission has maintained that the framework is preventive in nature and aims to strengthen grievance redressal mechanisms across higher education institutions.
However, students participating in the protest expressed fears that the provisions could be interpreted subjectively and may be misused, leading to false complaints and targeted actions. They warned that instead of fostering inclusion, the regulations might create mistrust among students and disrupt campus harmony.
Several protesters said they support equality and justice but believe the current structure of the rules requires reconsideration. They demanded greater clarity, transparency, and checks to ensure that the system is not misapplied.
As of Monday evening, the Lucknow University administration had not issued an official response to the protest. Sources indicated that the matter may be reviewed by university authorities in consultation with student representatives.
The protest highlights a broader debate unfolding across the country over the implementation of equity-focused policies in higher education. As universities begin enforcing the new regulations, their impact on campus dynamics and student relations is likely to remain under close watch.
