Veteran industrialist Mohan Lal Mittal, father of global steel magnate and ArcelorMittal Executive Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, passed away peacefully at the age of 99. He died on the evening of January 15 in London, surrounded by his family, bringing to a close a life defined by discipline, integrity, and unwavering values.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said that Mohan Lal Mittal distinguished himself in the world of industry while remaining deeply passionate about Indian culture. He noted that the late industrialist was actively involved in philanthropic initiatives that reflected his commitment to social progress. PM Modi said he would cherish their interactions and extended heartfelt condolences to the family and admirers, concluding his message with “Om Shanti.”

Confirming the news, Lakshmi Mittal described his father as an extraordinary man whose strong religious beliefs and work ethic remained with him throughout his life. He said Mohan Lal Mittal passed away peacefully and was just months short of reaching his 100th birthday, calling his long life a blessing and a source of inspiration for the family.
Born into a humble and caring family in the small village of Rajgarh in Rajasthan, Mohan Lal Mittal showed determination from an early age to rise above his circumstances. He believed firmly that hard work was the foundation of success and was known as a diligent student with a keen interest in commerce. His journey from modest beginnings to becoming a respected industrialist remains a powerful example of perseverance and purpose.
Despite his achievements in business, those close to him say Mohan Lal Mittal remained grounded and deeply connected to people around him. Family stood at the centre of his life, and he made it a point to stay in regular contact with loved ones, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other milestones whenever possible.
Mohan Lal Mittal is survived by five children and their spouses, 11 grandchildren and their spouses, and 22 great-grandchildren. Lakshmi Mittal said his father was not only a guiding force but also a close and constant friend who cherished relationships and valued togetherness.
