The Punjab government has officially revised school timings across the state in view of prevailing cold wave and changing weather conditions. The decision has been taken to ensure the safety and health of students, especially young children who face difficulties traveling to school during extreme winter mornings.
According to the official order issued by the Directorate of School Education, Punjab, the new timings will be implemented from January 16, 2026 to January 21, 2026 in all government and aided schools.
As per the revised schedule, primary schools will now function from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Middle schools, high schools and senior secondary schools will operate from 10:00 am to 3:20 pm.
The order applies to all categories of schools, including government schools, aided institutions, smart schools and model schools. Authorities have been instructed to ensure strict compliance so that students are not required to reach school during the coldest hours of the day.
Officials said the decision was taken after reviewing the weather conditions across Punjab, where low temperatures and fog have been affecting normal life. The delayed start is expected to help reduce health risks among students and improve attendance during the winter period.
The directive was issued by Harinder Singh Saroa, Director of School Education (Secondary), Punjab, and has been circulated to all district education officers, school heads and administrative authorities for immediate implementation.
Parents have welcomed the move, saying it will make it easier for children to attend school without being exposed to harsh winter mornings. Schools have also been asked to inform parents and students about the revised timings so that transportation and daily schedules can be adjusted smoothly.
