A 14-year-old girl in Kanpur was allegedly assaulted in a moving SUV. A journalist has been arrested, while a police sub-inspector Amit Kumar Maurya is absconding. Senior officials have taken action over lapses in the case.
A deeply disturbing case from Kanpur has raised serious questions about law enforcement accountability after a 14-year-old schoolgirl alleged that she was abducted and sexually assaulted in a moving vehicle. The case has shocked Uttar Pradesh as one of the accused is a serving police sub-inspector, while another, a local journalist, has already been arrested.

According to statements given by the victim and her family, the minor was taken in a Scorpio SUV and assaulted for nearly two hours. The girl later told police that two men were involved — journalist Shivbaran and Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar Maurya, who is posted in Kanpur. After the alleged assault, she was left unconscious near her home.
The girl’s brother contacted emergency services late that night, but the family claims that no immediate police action was taken. When they tried to file a complaint at a local police outpost and mentioned the involvement of a police officer, they were allegedly turned away. Even when a case was later registered, the family said key sections of the POCSO Act, which applies in crimes involving minors, were not included initially.
The matter gained urgency after it reached Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal. Senior officers then took disciplinary action against officials accused of negligence. Deputy Commissioner of Police Dinesh Chandra Tripathi was removed from his post, while Sachendi police station inspector Vikram Singh was suspended for failing to act promptly on the complaint.
Meanwhile, journalist Shivbaran has been taken into custody, but Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar Maurya remains absconding. Investigators have confirmed that the Scorpio SUV allegedly used in the crime is registered in the name of the police officer. Police teams have been formed to trace him, and officials say he will be arrested soon.
The case has now become a major test of fairness and transparency within the Uttar Pradesh Police. Legal experts and child rights activists have demanded that the POCSO Act be applied properly and that the investigation be conducted independently and without bias. They have also called for protection for the victim and her family.
Senior police officials have assured that the case will be handled strictly according to law and that no one, regardless of rank or position, will be shielded. The investigation is currently being monitored at a high level to ensure accountability and justice.
As of now, the journalist accused in the case is in custody, the police sub-inspector named by the victim is being actively searched for, and disciplinary action has been taken against officers accused of mishandling the case. The outcome of this investigation will play a crucial role in restoring public trust in the justice system and ensuring that a minor victim receives the justice she deserves.
