ED Seizes ₹1.41 Crore and 6.7 Kg Gold from Karnataka Congress MLA Satish Krishna Sail

MLA Satish Krishna Sail Linked to Convicted Shipping Firm

Satish Krishna Sail, 59, represents Karwar in Uttara Kannada district. The ED’s probe stems from a special court conviction in Bengaluru, where Sail and multiple entities were found guilty of participating in the illegal export of iron ore fines.

The exports were allegedly carried out by Shree Mallikarjun Shipping Pvt Ltd, a company reported to be owned by Sail. According to the agency, the firm acted “in collusion with other entities” to bypass legal norms and ship iron ore abroad unlawfully.

Widespread Search Operations Across Four Cities

The ED conducted searches on August 13 and 14 across Karwar, Goa, Mumbai, and Delhi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Apart from Sail’s premises, searches were carried out on several other companies, including:

  • Ashapura Minechem
  • Shree Lal Mahal
  • Swastik Steels (Hosepet)
  • ILC Industries
  • Sri Lakshmi Venkateshwara Minerals

Conviction Forms Basis of ED Probe

All these companies, along with Sail, have already been convicted by the special court for MPs and MLAs in the case. The ED stated that its investigation is based on this conviction order and is aimed at tracing and seizing proceeds of crime.

The MLA could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.

Political and Legal Implications

The fresh seizure adds to the political spotlight on Karnataka’s mining sector, which has been under scrutiny for years. The case is expected to have both legal repercussions for the MLA and political ramifications for the Congress party in the state.
