In a stunning development that has shaken the political corridors of Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Sunday expelled his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav from the party for six years, citing “irresponsible behaviour.” More shockingly, he also announced that he is cutting all family ties with him — a move that signals an unprecedented rift within one of India’s most prominent political families.

The announcement came through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where the RJD supremo minced no words.
“Ignoring moral values in personal life weakens our collective struggle for social justice. The activities, public conduct, and irresponsible behavior of the eldest son are not in accordance with our family values and traditions,” Lalu wrote.
He added, “Therefore, due to these circumstances, I remove him from the party and family. From now on, he will not have any role of any kind in the party and family. He is expelled from the party for 6 years.”

The Trigger: A Viral Facebook Post
This political earthquake comes just a day after a controversial Facebook post surfaced from Tej Pratap Yadav’s official account, stating he was “in a relationship” with a young woman. The post immediately went viral, triggering criticism and raising eyebrows across social media.
Many users were quick to remind Tej Pratap of his marriage in 2018 to Aishwarya Rai, the granddaughter of former Bihar Chief Minister Daroga Rai. The union, which was once celebrated with great pomp, eventually spiraled into controversy, with Aishwarya accusing her husband and in-laws of mistreatment and leaving the marital home within months.
Tej Pratap Responds: ‘I Was Hacked’
Late Saturday night, Tej Pratap took to X to clarify his stance, alleging that his Facebook account had been hacked.
“My social media platform was hacked and my photographs were edited wrongfully,” he wrote, claiming that he was not responsible for the viral post.
However, the damage was seemingly already done.
A Family Torn Apart
While public disagreements and intra-family rifts are not unheard of in Indian politics, Lalu Prasad’s outright expulsion of his own son — both from the party and the family — is unprecedented.
Insiders suggest that this wasn’t just about a single social media post. Tensions had reportedly been simmering for months, with Tej Pratap often going off-script in public statements and appearing distant from the party’s organizational activities.
The move has drawn mixed reactions. Some political observers believe this could be Lalu’s way of asserting control over the RJD’s future, especially with younger son Tejashwi Yadav being groomed as his political heir. Others see it as a deeply personal and painful decision taken to preserve the family’s public image and political integrity.
What Lies Ahead?
Tej Pratap Yadav, once seen as a rising star in Bihar politics, now finds himself politically isolated and estranged from his family. His next steps remain unclear — whether he will form his own political outfit, take a sabbatical, or attempt reconciliation remains to be seen.
But one thing is certain: this episode marks a dramatic and emotional chapter in Bihar’s political history — where personal relationships have collided head-on with public responsibilities.
