Chandigarh, March 21: In a significant breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against four individuals involved in the Chandigarh grenade attack case, unraveling a disturbing cross-border conspiracy. Among those named are US-based gangster-turned-terrorist Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passia, and Pakistan-based terrorist Harwinder Singh Rinda, who allegedly orchestrated the attack from foreign soil.
The case revolves around the grenade attack that took place on September 11, 2024, at a house in Sector 10D, Chandigarh. The perpetrators, Rohan Masih and Vishal Masih, hurled the grenade while seated in an auto-rickshaw, targeting a residence occupied by a retired superintendent of police. Miraculously, the house owner—a retired principal—and his wife narrowly escaped harm.
A Chilling Conspiracy Unraveled
The attack initially seemed like an isolated act of violence, but as investigations progressed, a darker plot emerged. The case, first probed by Chandigarh Police, was later handed over to the NIA due to its possible links with international terrorist networks. The agency’s findings revealed a carefully planned attack, with the accused conducting reconnaissance of the target location before executing their plan.
According to the NIA, Happy Passia and Harwinder Singh Rinda directed Rohan Masih and Vishal Masih to carry out the attack, ensuring that their identities remained hidden. However, fate had other plans—CCTV footage captured their faces, leading to their swift arrest.
Despite his involvement in transporting the attackers, auto-rickshaw driver Kuldeep Kumar has not been charged by the NIA, as there was no evidence of his prior knowledge of the plot.
Cross-Border Terrorism and Smuggling Angle
Beyond the attack itself, the NIA’s investigation has exposed a larger network of illegal arms smuggling and cross-border terrorism. The agency is delving deeper into how explosives and weapons are being trafficked into India under the command of terrorists like Rinda, who operates from Pakistan.
This case serves as a stark reminder of how gangster networks are now merging with terror groups, using unsuspecting individuals to execute their sinister plans. The NIA remains committed to tracking down all those involved in the conspiracy and ensuring they face the full force of the law.
A City on Edge
The grenade attack has left Chandigarh’s residents shaken, highlighting the vulnerabilities even in a relatively peaceful city. The fact that a retired police officer was the target has raised concerns about the security of individuals who have served in law enforcement.
While the immediate threat may have been neutralized with the arrests, the investigation is far from over. Authorities are now working to dismantle the larger network behind the attack, ensuring that such incidents do not threaten the safety of citizens in the future.
The case stands as a testament to the tireless efforts of India’s security forces, who continue to safeguard the nation against both domestic and international threats. As the legal proceedings move forward, all eyes will be on how justice is served in this chilling act of terrorism.
