In a shocking revelation, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has apparently accused Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan of leaking sensitive information in the dressing room during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. According to a News24 Sports report, Gambhir had raised this issue in a recent BCCI review meeting.
The allegations have surfaced during the five-match Test series which India lost with a disappointing 3-1 margin. Sarfaraz Khan, known for the exceptional 150-run innings for the home Test series against New Zealand, but he was benched for the entire Test series, is believed to be the one who leaked the files. The files are said to have contained the fiery words of Gambhir after India had lost the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Sources indicate a renewed tension within the dressing room because of trust breach. Gambhir is known for his candidness and reportedly has made it vocally, which will determine his future under Khan’s tenure as coach.
Before the fifth Test in Sydney, Gambhir denied the controversy surrounding the dressing room and maintained honesty and teamwork in a press conference before the match.
“Debates between coach and player should remain in the dressing room. They were just reports, not truth,” he stated. Gambhir further emphasized, “Indian cricket will remain strong as long as honest people are in the dressing room. Performance is the only criterion that matters. The team’s needs must come first.”
According to the report, after India’s loss in the final Test, Gambhir was angry and frustrated. As mentioned by The Indian Express, he stormed at the boys and said, “Bahut ho gaya” (Enough is enough). The head coach then criticized the batters for playing their natural game rather than adhering to the team strategy discussed in the dressing room.
Loss in the series has really dragged tight scrutiny on the team’s performance, with Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma coming under severe criticism for their leadership during a challenging phase for Indian cricket.
The Indian team is now getting ready for a white-ball series against England, and then for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. However, the internal conflicts that surfaced during the BGT have darkened the morale and unity of the team.
As the team rebuilds, the question is whether they can regain harmony in the dressing room and regain their dominance on the international stage.
