Free Wi-Fi Now Free on Air India Domestic Flights: In a major move towards improving in-flight experience, Air India has opened up free Wi-Fi on its domestic flights, giving flyers the facility to browse the internet, view the social network, and stay connected while flying. This new facility is a continuation of a successful pilot program carried out on international routes. It included New York, London, Paris, and Singapore.
Free Wi-Fi will be available on some aircraft, such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and certain Airbus A321neo models. Internet access will be available on various devices, including Android and iOS smartphones, laptops, and tablets, so that passengers can be productive or entertained during their flight.
How to Connect to Free Wi-Fi Onboard Air India Flights
Connecting to Air India’s Wi-Fi service is a straightforward process. Passengers can follow these simple steps:
- Open your device’s settings and enable Wi-Fi.
- Look for the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network in your available Wi-Fi networks.
- Tap on the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network, which will redirect you to the Air India portal.
- Enter your PNR (Passenger Name Record) and last name to log in and begin enjoying free internet access.
How Does In-flight Wi-Fi Operate?
Air India’s in-flight Wi-Fi uses both air-to-ground and satellite-based technology systems.
- Air to Ground System: The antennas onboard the aircraft tap the signal available on the nearest available ground tower for connectivity. Until a certain elevation, depending upon the number of land towers, signals are strong due to which good connectivity is feasible. Signals acquired from the grounds are sent by the ground stations up to these antennas fitted onto the bottom plane.
- Satellite-Based Wi-Fi: The satellite-based Wi-Fi is more widely used as it sends internet signals from the ground stations to the aircraft via satellites. Antennas on top of the plane receive the signals, covering more area than the ground towers.
The two technologies above guarantee a steady and reliable internet connection, making it possible for passengers to surf the web even when flying over 10,000 feet high.
Why Is Mobile Data Banned During Flights?
Air India now offers free Wi-Fi, but mobile data is still not allowed on board. The Civil Aviation Authority has expressed its concern over the potential interference of mobile phones with the aircraft’s electronic equipment, including the pilot’s communication systems.
Experts say, although most mobile phones emit very weak radio signals, devices like Kindles, iPods, laptops, and handheld gaming consoles also radiate radio waves, which might interfere with the plane’s activities in a closed environment. Hence, it is essential for the passengers to comply with the regulations of the airline and turn off mobile data on the flight.
With free Wi-Fi, passengers of Air India can now enjoy seamless internet access while traveling. This is a huge improvement in the services of Air India. Stay connected and make the most of your time in the sky!
