BJP Set to Release First Candidate List as Delhi Assembly Election 2025 Campaign Gains Momentum

As the countdown for Delhi Assembly Election 2025 has begun, political temperature in national capital has soared. Bharatiya Janata Party is now preparing to roll out the first list of its candidates with an aim to wrest power from Congress in the National Capital which was lost a whopping 27 years ago. The list containing names of 25-28 candidates may come as early as tonight or tomorrow as per reports.

The BJP, normally known for being quick to declare candidates, has been late this time. Yet, the party will present strong leadership as prominent leaders may be included in the first list. News has it that Parvesh Verma will contest from the New Delhi constituency against the AAP leader and ex-Chief Minister of Delhi – Arvind Kejriwal. Satish Upadhyay is another name said to contest from Malviya Nagar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will further energize the BJP’s campaign as he inaugurates and lays the foundation stones for multiple key projects on January 3. The event, viewed as a strategic launch of the BJP’s election drive, will be followed by a ‘Parivartan Rally’ in Rohini’s Japanese Park on January 5.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned in September 2024, is now looking for a third consecutive term. Under Chief Minister Atishi, who replaced Kejriwal, AAP has already announced candidates for all 70 constituencies. AAP’s robust grassroots campaign aims to repeat the successes it has enjoyed in the past, including securing 67 seats in 2015 and 63 in 2020.

Meanwhile, the Congress, which had once ruled Delhi under the late Sheila Dikshit’s leadership, has put out two lists of candidates that cover 47 constituencies. Despite its weakened presence in the recent elections, the party still hopes to reclaim lost ground.

The elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly are likely to take place in February next year. Still, the Election Commission is yet to announce the official dates for the same. The term of the current assembly ends on February 23, 2025.

The BJP is trying to reclaim the position, which it last held in 1998 when it was headed by the late Sushma Swaraj for 52 days. The Congress had dominated Delhi from 1998 to 2013, while AAP took power in 2015.

As Delhi gears up for yet another high-stakes electoral battle, all eyes are on the BJP’s candidate list and PM Modi’s upcoming events, which could set the tone for the party’s campaign in the capital.
