Amritsar: A day after the alleged assassination attempt on former Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, pro-Khalistan activist Narain Singh Chaura was produced in Amritsar district court. Though police had demanded a seven-day remand for further interrogation, the court has granted only a three-day remand.Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar assured a transparent and detailed investigation to uncover the motive behind the attack. “Given Chaura’s radical and political affiliations, we aim to thoroughly investigate his intentions,” said Bhullar.

A 9 mm pistol was recovered from Chaura’s possession, and its source is under scrutiny. “We are probing the procurement of the weapon and are coordinating with multiple agencies to examine both technical and human intelligence inputs,” he added. The investigation is being overseen by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation) Alam Vijay Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation).

Family Files Petition Alleging Police Misconduct

Sons Jagjit Singh Bajwa and Baljinder Singh Bajwa, who are lawyers, have moved a petition of police misconduct. They claimed that the police had detained their father without disclosing his whereabouts to the family and sought legal access to him. They also challenged a police raid on their residence where DVRs, laptops, pen drives, and other personal belongings were allegedly seized.

Akali Leader Seeks Independent Probe SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia sought to question the bona fides of the police investigation. Majithia shared CCTV footage on social media platform X, alleging that a senior police official was seen talking to Chaura before the attack. He demanded an independent Supreme Court-monitored probe into the role of top local police officials.

Public and Political Reactions
The incident has triggered reactions all over Punjab, where political leaders and citizens demand a fair investigation. The case has also revived debate over security arrangements for political leaders in the state.

The next hearing on Chaura’s remand and related petitions is likely to throw light on the further investigation.
