Yellapura, Karnataka: In a tragic incident, eight people lost their lives and ten others sustained injuries when a truck carrying fruit vendors plunged into a 50-metre-deep valley in the early hours of Wednesday.
The accident happened about 5.30 am near a forest region on the Savanur-Hubballi road in the Uttara Kannada district. “The victims are all fruit vendors who were returning from Savanur to Yellapura for the fair, which began this morning,” Superintendent of Police M. Narayana said.
According to initial reports, the driver of the truck attempted to move to the extreme left to make way for another vehicle. This maneuver caused the truck to veer off the road and fall into the valley. The absence of a protective wall along the roadside is believed to have contributed to the severity of the accident.
“Eight people died on the spot, and two suffered critical injuries. The injured have been shifted to KIMS hospital in Hubballi for treatment,” SP Narayana stated.
Emergency services and local authorities rushed to the scene to rescue the injured and recover the bodies of the deceased. The condition of the critically injured remains a cause of concern.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. The lack of safety infrastructure on the Savanur-Hubballi road has raised concerns, prompting calls for urgent remedial measures.
The accident has cast a pall of gloom over the region, with the families of the victims mourning their untimely demise.
