Yamuna Expressway accident: A tragic road accident unfolded early Tuesday morning on the Yamuna Expressway, linking Delhi and Agra, when dense fog led to a massive multi-vehicle pile-up in Mathura district. At least four people lost their lives, while more than 25 others sustained injuries after several buses and smaller vehicles collided and some caught fire.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety during winter fog conditions in northern India.
Accident Occurred Near Mathura in Low Visibility Conditions
According to police officials, the accident took place around 4:30 am near Milestone 127, under the jurisdiction of Baldev Police Station in Mathura.
Dense fog severely reduced visibility on the Agra-to-Noida carriageway, triggering a chain collision involving seven buses and at least three smaller vehicles.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mathura Shlok Kumar confirmed the details.
“Four people died, and 25 others were injured in the accident. The vehicles collided due to extremely low visibility. Some buses caught fire after the collision. All injured passengers were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals,” he said.
Buses Reduced to Charred Wreckage
Visuals from the accident site showed severely damaged and burnt buses, with twisted metal scattered across the expressway. Fire tenders and rescue teams rushed to the scene to control the blaze and assist trapped passengers.
Cranes were deployed to remove the wreckage, while police and highway authorities worked to clear the road.
Despite the severity of the crash, officials stated that none of the injured are in critical condition.
Traffic Diversions Implemented, Passengers Assisted
The pile-up led to the temporary closure of the affected stretch of the Yamuna Expressway. Authorities implemented traffic diversions to manage congestion and prevent further accidents.
Passengers stranded at the site were transported to their destinations using government-arranged vehicles, ensuring minimal disruption despite the chaos.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Expresses Condolences
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote in Hindi:
“The loss of lives in the road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district is extremely tragic and heartbreaking. My condolences are with the bereaved families.”
He further directed district officials to ensure proper and timely medical treatment for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
Fog Continues to Pose Serious Road Safety Risks
The accident highlights the recurring danger posed by dense winter fog on high-speed corridors like the Yamuna Expressway. Reduced visibility, combined with speeding and close vehicle movement, often results in catastrophic pile-ups during early morning hours.
Authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to reduce speed, maintain safe distance, and use fog lights while traveling in such conditions.
