X Down Globally: Major Outage Hits App and Website on January 13, 2026

X Down Globally: X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, suffered a widespread service disruption on Tuesday evening, leaving thousands of users across India and the United States unable to access the app and website. The outage triggered a wave of complaints on tracking platforms and sparked frustration across social media as users struggled to view feeds, post updates, or use messaging features.

According to outage monitoring website Downdetector, the first spike in reports appeared around 7:43 PM IST in India. More than 2,000 users flagged problems within minutes. Around 46 percent of users said they were unable to access the website, while 41 percent reported issues with the mobile application. Another 13 percent complained about server connectivity problems.

The outage appeared to hit major Indian cities the hardest. Users in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Indore were among those reporting significant disruptions. Many said their timelines failed to refresh, posts were not loading, and messages were stuck or delayed.

The issue was not limited to India. In the United States, the impact was far larger. Downdetector recorded more than 20,000 complaints during the same period. Nearly 59 percent of users in the US reported problems with the X mobile app, while 25 percent struggled to access the website. Another 16 percent said their feeds and timelines were not loading properly.

Cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago were among the most affected areas, suggesting the outage was widespread and not linked to any single regional network.

Despite the massive spike in user complaints, X had not released any official statement explaining the cause of the disruption at the time of publishing. Some users, including media organisations, were able to access the platform normally, making it difficult to determine whether the issue was tied to specific servers, regions, or account clusters.

As news of the outage spread, users turned to other platforms like Instagram, Threads and Reddit to vent their frustration and share memes. Some joked about being forced to take a break from social media, while others tagged Elon Musk and the X engineering team demanding quick fixes.

One user wrote that every time X goes down, they are “forced to be productive in real life,” while another complained that live feeds were frozen and posts were not visible even though the app was technically opening.

X has faced several outages since its rebranding from Twitter, raising concerns about infrastructure stability as the platform continues to evolve under Elon Musk’s ownership. While most disruptions are resolved within hours, repeated failures have sparked questions about reliability for journalists, businesses, and creators who depend on the platform for real-time communication.

Users are advised to check network connectivity, restart the app, and monitor outage trackers until full service is restored. A technical update from X is still awaited.
