New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather update for multiple regions across the country. As per the latest forecast, parts of North India including Delhi-NCR witnessed intense weather activity on Wednesday evening, while southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu are likely to experience heavy rainfall in the coming days. Meanwhile, regions like Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to face a sharp surge in temperatures.
Delhi-NCR Lashed by Heavy Rain, Dust Storm and Thunderstorms
On Wednesday evening, residents of Delhi-NCR were caught off guard as sudden thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph swept through the region. A massive dust storm engulfed the national capital, drastically reducing visibility and causing widespread flight delays and traffic jams across major roads.
Tragically, the severe weather led to two fatalities and left 11 individuals injured in separate incidents, according to official reports. In addition to power outages and waterlogging, fallen trees and infrastructure damage were also reported in several localities.
Rain Forecast for Kerala and Tamil Nadu: IMD Issues Red Alert
Down south, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days as the southwest monsoon prepares to make its grand arrival. Contrary to the earlier projection of May 27, meteorologists now believe the monsoon could hit Kerala sooner than expected.

The IMD has issued a red alert for four districts in Kerala—Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode—warning residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions. “The conditions are favourable for the further advance of southwest monsoon over Kerala during the next 4-5 days,” the IMD stated.
Monsoon Relief for Some, Heatwave for Others
While the monsoon is expected to bring much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat, especially in the southern and eastern states, other regions might not be as lucky. The IMD has warned of a temperature surge in parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, with daytime temperatures expected to cross 44°C in some areas.
Simultaneously, light to moderate rainfall is likely in regions like West Bengal, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, further balancing the varied weather patterns across the country.
Weather Outlook: What to Expect Next
- Delhi-NCR: Possibility of continued thunderstorms and light showers over the next 24 hours.
- Kerala & Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall expected; monsoon arrival imminent.
- Rajasthan, Haryana & Punjab: Rising temperatures; heatwave-like conditions.
- Other states: Scattered rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and West Bengal.
As the country stands on the cusp of monsoon arrival, citizens are advised to stay updated with official IMD alerts, ensure emergency preparedness, and avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather conditions. The mix of rainfall in some regions and intensifying heat in others highlights the dynamic nature of Indian summer weather, making weather awareness more crucial than ever.
