Uproar in Parliament Over Deportation of Indians from the US

Uproar in Parliament :Both the houses of the Indian Parliament witnessed a lot of commotion on Thursday and chaos prevailed for most of the time. The commotion was more in the backdrop of the fact that 104 Indians were reportedly deported from the US and 33 of them were from the state of Gujarat who reached Ahmedabad early in the morning.

As soon as the session began, opposition MPs, most of them from the Congress, staged a protest demanding a discussion on the issue. The opposition termed the deportation carried out by the US authorities in a military aircraft as an inhumane act and sought immediate intervention from the government.

The Lok Sabha was first adjourned at around 12 noon following uproar by opposition members. Congress MPs had given notice for an adjournment motion to discuss the issue. As soon as the proceedings of the House resumed, the opposition members trooped into the well of the House raising slogans against the government.

BJP MP Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, tried to regain control of the House but had to adjourn it till 2 pm.

Similar scenes were witnessed in the Rajya Sabha, where members of the Congress, CPI, TMC, AAP and CPM moved notices under Rule 267 seeking adjournment of business scheduled for discussion on the deportation issue. All the notices were rejected by the Chair.

Opposition MPs staged a protest accusing the government of ignoring the plight of deported Indians. They alleged that the individuals were taken back in a military aircraft in a humiliating manner and demanded an official response.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who was in the Chair, directed that no comments made by the protesting MPs be recorded. As the protests intensified, he adjourned the Rajya Sabha till noon.

Several senior opposition leaders including CPI’s Santosh Kumar P, TMC’s Sanket Gokhale, CPM’s V Sivadasan and Congress MPs Anil Kumar Yadav, Shaktisinh Gohil, Pramod Tiwari, Renuka Choudhary and Ashok Singh have given notices demanding a discussion on the issue.

So far the government has not reacted to the development and now everyone is questioning whether it will make any public statement in the coming days. Opposition parties have threatened that they will force the government to give an explanation as well as an open discussion in Parliament. This deportation of these Indians has also become a full-fledged political issue in an already heated session of Parliament.
