India vs Sri Lanka: Suryakumar Yadav, renowned for his powerful batting, has been appointed captain of the Indian T20 team for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka starting on July 27.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the squad for the 50-over series against Sri Lanka next month, with Sharma continuing as the ODI captain.
Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for both formats. Riyan Parag, who scored seven half-centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Delhi speedster Harshit Rana are the two new faces in the ODI squad.
The first T20 International will be held on July 27, followed by games on July 28 and 30. All matches will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
Suryakumar Yadav, 33, was selected as the skipper for the T20 series, surpassing Hardik Pandya, who served as the vice-captain during India’s title run in the Americas.
Previously, Suryakumar led India to a 4-1 victory over Australia in a T20I series last November, followed by a 1-1 draw in South Africa.
Shreyas Iyer, who lost his national contract due to missing domestic cricket, has made a comeback to the ODI squad alongside KL Rahul, who played as a keeper-batter during last year’s 50-over World Cup at home.
Iyer captained this year’s IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, with Gambhir serving as the team mentor.
Gautam Gambhir is taking over from Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended last month with the World Cup triumph. Dravid declined an extension despite Rohit’s efforts to persuade him.
The team is aiming to build towards the 2026 T20 World Cup, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka.
