Supreme Court Hears SAD Leader Bikram Singh Majithia’s Plea in Disproportionate Assets Case

The Supreme Court on Monday heard a plea filed by senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a disproportionate assets case, a matter that continues to draw political and legal attention in Punjab. The hearing took place before a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.

During the proceedings, Majithia’s counsel, senior advocate Gaurav Agarwal, sought interim bail for the SAD leader. He argued that the circumstances of the case warranted temporary relief and urged the court to protect Majithia’s liberty while the legal issues raised in the petition are examined. The defence maintained that continued coercive action would be unjustified at this stage.

Representing the Punjab government, a senior advocate opposed the immediate grant of interim bail and requested time to file a detailed response. The state sought two weeks to place its arguments and supporting material on record, stating that a comprehensive reply was necessary for a fair consideration of the matter.

The Supreme Court accepted the request and scheduled the next hearing for February 2, 2026. The bench clarified that the plea for interim bail would be considered on the next date of hearing after the state submits its response. The court indicated that it would take a reasoned decision only after hearing both sides in detail.

Bikram Singh Majithia, a prominent political figure and senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, is facing allegations of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The case has remained in the public spotlight due to its political sensitivity and its potential impact on Punjab’s political landscape. Majithia has consistently denied the allegations, asserting that the case is politically motivated and lacks merit.

The Supreme Court’s handling of the plea is being closely watched, as it may set the tone for how similar cases involving public representatives are approached. With the interim bail decision deferred, attention now turns to the February 2 hearing, which is expected to be a crucial moment in the legal battle surrounding the case.
