A sensational kidnapping allegation involving a teenage student in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district has taken an unexpected turn after police confirmed that the incident was entirely fabricated. The case, which initially sparked fear and panic across Belthangady, was exposed following a detailed police investigation that uncovered multiple inconsistencies in the girl’s account.
The 16-year-old first PU student had earlier claimed that she was targeted by unknown miscreants while travelling to college on her scooter. According to her initial complaint, three masked men allegedly arrived in a car, threatened her with a knife, and attempted to forcibly abduct her. She also told police that she suffered injuries to her hand during a struggle with the attackers.
The disturbing allegation caused widespread concern among local residents and parents, prompting senior police officials to rush to the spot and launch an intensive investigation. The incident also drew political attention, with local BJP MLA Harish Poonja visiting the student and her family and assuring them of full support.
However, as investigators began verifying the details, cracks started appearing in the narrative. Police noticed contradictions between the student’s statements, the physical evidence, and the timeline she described. After sustained questioning and careful cross-verification, the truth finally came to light.
According to police sources, the student had staged the entire episode in an attempt to pressure her family into admitting her to a college in Mangaluru. To make the story appear convincing, she allegedly injured herself by cutting her hand with a blade. Investigators also found that she had burnt the books in her bag at home and later dumped the bag by the roadside to support her version of events.
Police further revealed that the student had deliberately stopped her scooter midway and inflicted injuries on herself before claiming that strangers had attacked her. The case initially appeared credible because a passer-by, identified as Abbusali, noticed her near the scooter behaving as if she had fallen and alerted others. His account inadvertently strengthened the false claim, leading even family members to believe the incident was genuine.
The case registered at the Belthangady police station witnessed hectic activity throughout the day as officers worked to separate facts from fiction. During prolonged interrogation, the student reportedly broke down and confessed to fabricating the entire kidnapping story.
Following the confession, police officially closed the case, bringing relief to residents who had been anxious about safety in the area. Officials stated that while no criminal action was pursued considering the student’s age, the incident highlighted the serious consequences of spreading false information.
Police have announced that appropriate counselling will be arranged for the student and her family to prevent such incidents in the future. Authorities also urged students and parents to act responsibly and avoid creating panic through false or exaggerated claims.
