Punjabi sufi singer Bir Singh has publicly apologised for a dance performance that took place during the commemoration of Guru Teg Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom anniversary in Srinagar. The event, organised by the Punjab Government’s Language Department, aimed to honour the life, teachings, and supreme sacrifice of Guru Teg Bahadur. However, a dance sequence during the programme sparked outrage, particularly from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which demanded an explanation and apology.
Event Sparks Controversy
The controversy erupted when videos emerged showing attendees dancing to a Punjabi song during the solemn commemoration. The SGPC criticised the act, calling it inappropriate and disrespectful to the occasion. The incident quickly gained traction, leading to public debate and criticism of the organisers.
The Language Department of Punjab had invited Bir Singh to perform Bani of Guru Teg Bahadur and present sufi music to mark the occasion. The department’s director, while unavailable for direct comment, released copies of the official invite sent to Bir Singh, clarifying the nature of the event. A copy of the singer’s apology letter to Sri Akal Takht Sahib was also shared.
Bir Singh’s Apology
In his formal letter, Bir Singh expressed deep remorse for what he described as an “unintentional mistake.” He admitted that a lack of communication from his management team led to the misunderstanding.
In his video statement posted on Instagram, Bir Singh said:
“I arrived in Srinagar directly from Australia, and upon reaching, phone networks and other services were disrupted. The biggest mistake was on my management’s part, as they did not give me accurate details about the event. I went directly to the stage, unaware of the solemn nature of the programme.”
He further explained that he assumed the event would follow the format of his previous commercial performances with the Punjabi Sahit Academy. Only after realising the mistake did he apologise to the Sangat, arranged for proper decorum by removing shoes, and recited Salok Mahalla Nauvan to pay tribute.
Taking Responsibility
Bir Singh has taken full responsibility for the incident and announced that he has dismissed his management team for their negligence. He also pledged to maintain strict decorum in future events dedicated to Sikh gurus.
“I admit my mistake and request forgiveness from Akal Takht Sahib, Jathedar Sahib, and the entire Sikh community. I am ready to accept any service or decision they deem appropriate. I am a Sikh child, and I humbly seek forgiveness. Such mistakes will not be repeated in the future,” he stated.
Public Reaction
The incident has reignited discussions on maintaining the sanctity of religious and cultural events. While some have accepted Bir Singh’s heartfelt apology, others continue to urge stricter oversight of programmes commemorating Sikh martyrs.
Bir Singh’s apology highlights the importance of understanding the significance of religious events before performing at them. The singer has assured that he will remain mindful of Sikh traditions and uphold the respect of Guru Teg Bahadur’s legacy in all future performances.
