Italian women’s cricket has been shaken just days after their historic debut at the T20 World Cup 2026. Allegations of sexual harassment have been leveled against the women’s cricket coordinator, Prabath Ekneligoda, prompting the Federazione Cricket Italiana (FCRI) to suspend him immediately from all federal duties and activities. The suspension comes as the allegations are being investigated by the federal prosecutor.

In an official statement, the FCRI confirmed that the decision was made to protect players and maintain the integrity of the sport. The board noted that the precautionary suspension is a responsible step to prevent undue speculation while allowing a thorough investigation to take place, with full respect for personal dignity, due process, and the presumption of innocence.
Ekneligoda’s lawyer has denied the allegations, suggesting they were motivated by “ulterior motives.” According to FCRI media manager Rakbir Hasan, Ekneligoda had accompanied board president Maria Lorena Haz Paz during Italy’s participation in the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka but had no official responsibilities during the tournament.
The FCRI also confirmed that proceedings are underway before the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, which is responsible for conducting the investigations and assessments required under sporting regulations. The suspension and investigation come at a crucial time for Italy’s women’s cricket, which has recently gained international attention following its T20 World Cup debut. While the allegations cast a shadow over the team’s achievements, the board has assured fans that the welfare of players and the integrity of the sport remain the top priority.
Key highlights of the situation include the suspension of Prabath Ekneligoda, ongoing investigation by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, denial of allegations by his legal team, and confirmation that he traveled with the board president during the T20 World Cup without performing official duties. Italian cricket authorities have promised transparency and adherence to due process as the investigation unfolds, ensuring that justice is served while safeguarding the sporting environment.
