Pune: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s petition over a controversial statement against freedom fighter Veer Savarkar has been challenged by strong resistance from Savarkar’s grandson, Satyaki Savarkar. A special court in Pune is hearing the case, where Satyaki Savarkar has presented an affidavit to ask for rejection of Gandhi’s plea.
What is the Case About?
In March 2023, during a speech in London, Rahul Gandhi allegedly made a derogatory remark about Savarkar’s contributions. He cited an old book claiming that “Savarkar, along with others, had beaten up a Muslim man and felt pleasure from it.” This statement led Satyaki Savarkar to file a defamation case, asserting that no historical evidence supports such an incident.
Controversy Over Rahul Gandhi’s Petition
On February 18, 2025, Rahul Gandhi had made an application in Pune’s Special MP/MLA Court, requesting a summary trial to speed up the judicial process. A summary trial is usually held in cases where the sentence is below two years, enabling a quicker decision based on documents and evidence.
But on February 25, 2025, Satyaki Savarkar, in his lawyer S.A. Kolhatkar, objected to this application by making a counter-affidavit.
Satyaki Savarkar’s Objection
In his affidavit, Satyaki Savarkar accused Rahul Gandhi of attempting to influence the court proceedings. He argued that Gandhi was trying to divert attention by bringing historical facts into the case, whereas the core issue was his allegedly defamatory remarks. His lawyer urged the court to dismiss Gandhi’s plea.
Next Hearing on March 19
The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 19, 2025. It remains to be seen whether the court will accept Rahul Gandhi’s request for a summary trial or uphold Satyaki Savarkar’s objections and dismiss the plea.
