Samay Raina Controversy : A Mumbai Police team arrived at the set of India’s Got Latent on Monday amid widespread outrage over controversial comments made by influencer Ranveer Allahbadia during a recent episode. A formal complaint has been lodged against Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, and the organizers of the show for allegedly making inappropriate and obscene remarks about women.
The controversy erupted after a BJP functionary registered a complaint with the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women’s Commission. The complaint accused the accused individuals of using abusive language and making offensive jokes about women during the show. It further alleged that the remarks were made deliberately for gaining popularity and financial benefit through the online broadcast.
Officials have confirmed that an inquiry is underway; however, no official case has been registered yet.
Following the public backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia issued an apology on Monday, acknowledging his lapse in judgment and vowing to use his platform more responsibly. In a video statement, he stated:
“Many of you have questioned whether this is how I wish to use my platform. The answer is obviously no. I am not here to provide any context or justification; I simply want to apologize. Personally, I had a lapse in judgment, and it was not appropriate on my part.”
The comments have caused political outrage that has even transcended party lines. Both the leaders of the BJP and Shiv Sena have condemned the remarks and demanded strict action against the people making such statements. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too responded to the issue by saying the need to respect the limits of free speech.
I have come to know about this controversy, though I haven’t seen the video yet. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right, but that should not go against the rights of others. In our society, we have certain norms and if someone crosses them, that is absolutely wrong. Action must be taken against such people,” Fadnavis said.
Amid the uproar, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reportedly asked YouTube to take down the controversial video. This move follows increasing public demand for accountability and stricter regulations on online content.
As the inquiry continues, the Mumbai Police are expected to take statements from all individuals involved. While the legal process unfolds, the controversy has sparked a larger debate on responsible content creation in the digital space.
