Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh has responded strongly after remarks made by Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan about the legacy of late former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh triggered a major political controversy in Latur ahead of the upcoming civic polls scheduled for January 15.

The issue erupted when Chavan, while addressing a gathering of BJP workers in Latur, said that the “memories” of Vilasrao Deshmukh would be wiped out from his hometown. The comment, made in the context of growing support for the BJP in the region, was seen by many as an attempt to diminish the influence of the respected Congress leader who played a significant role in shaping the development of the city and the state.
The Congress reacted sharply, accusing the BJP of showing arrogance of power and disrespecting a leader whose contributions went far beyond party politics. Party leaders said Vilasrao Deshmukh was not just a political figure but a symbol of Latur’s progress and identity. They argued that no political campaign could erase the emotional bond he shared with the people of the region.
Amit Deshmukh, Congress leader and son of the late chief minister, called the remarks deeply distressing. He said his father’s work had touched nearly every family in Latur and that such statements hurt the sentiments of the people who continue to respect and remember his service.
Riteish Deshmukh also spoke out through a video message, delivering an emotional and dignified response. Without directly naming the BJP leader, he said that leaders who dedicate their lives to the people leave behind a legacy that cannot be erased. He added that while written words can be removed, what is etched in people’s hearts remains forever, making it impossible for anyone to wipe out his father’s name or contribution.
As criticism grew, Ravindra Chavan clarified his statement the following day. He said his intention was not to target Vilasrao Deshmukh and that the focus of local body elections should remain on civic development and governance. He acknowledged that Vilasrao Deshmukh was a respected former chief minister and added that if his words had hurt Amit Deshmukh, he apologised. However, when asked whether he was apologising to the people of Latur, Chavan chose not to respond.
Vilasrao Deshmukh served as Maharashtra’s chief minister twice and is widely remembered for his leadership and development initiatives. Even years after his passing, his presence remains deeply felt in Latur, where residents continue to associate the city’s growth and recognition with his work.
With elections just days away, the controversy has added an emotional edge to the political contest. While the BJP is pushing a narrative focused on development and civic issues, the Congress has rallied around the memory of a leader who still commands widespread respect. The episode has underlined how political statements, especially those touching personal and regional pride, can quickly turn into a broader debate about history, legacy, and respect.
