The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. New Delhi MLA Parvesh Verma has been appointed as her deputy CM. The historic decision was taken after a high-level legislative party meeting at the BJP state office.
There was an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm among party workers at the Delhi BJP headquarters as they eagerly awaited the announcement. There was a jubilant atmosphere among party members in the office building, dancing to the beats of dhols and raising slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘PM Modi Zindabad‘.
Even before the official announcement, party members extended full support to the leadership and declared that they were ready to accept any candidate chosen by the party. Party worker Devender Kohli said, “It does not matter who becomes the chief minister, as every MLA will ensure that the Prime Minister’s promises are fulfilled.”
Women party workers were also actively involved in the celebrations. Another BJP worker, Smita Mohan, said, “It would be great if the chief minister is a woman, but we will welcome whichever leader the party chooses.”
Senior BJP leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankar, who were the party observers for the decision, reached the Delhi BJP headquarters around 6:25 pm. The much-awaited legislative party meeting began at 7 pm, in which it was decided to elect Rekha Gupta as the chief minister.
