Purvanchal Expressway Scandal: A shocking case of exploitation has emerged from the Purvanchal Expressway, where an Assistant Manager of the Anti Traffic Management System (ATMS) allegedly filmed private moments of travelers and residents before blackmailing them for money. The incident has triggered outrage across Uttar Pradesh and raised serious concerns about misuse of surveillance systems on national highways.
Couple’s Private Moment Recorded and Leaked
The controversy first came to light after a newly married couple from Lucknow lodged a formal complaint. According to the victims, they had briefly stopped their car near the Haldiapur toll plaza when the ATMS assistant manager, identified as Ashutosh Sarkar, allegedly recorded their private moments using expressway cameras.
The couple said Ashutosh later approached them with the video and demanded money. Terrified and under pressure, they reportedly paid ₹32,000 to stop the video from being leaked. However, despite the payment, the footage eventually surfaced on social media, causing the matter to escalate rapidly.
Not the Only Victims, Say Complainants
What makes the case even more alarming is that the Lucknow couple is not alone. Five to six additional victims—including women and girls from nearby villages—have submitted written complaints to the Chief Minister’s Office, the Sultanpur District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, and senior officials of the expressway authority.
Victims allege that Ashutosh consistently monitored expressway cameras, especially near the toll plaza area, looking for individuals engaging in private activities. Once he secured video clips, he would approach victims and threaten to leak the footage unless they paid him.
Misuse of Highway Cameras Raises Major Concerns
Initial inquiry reports suggest that Ashutosh allegedly recorded several women and young girls from villages surrounding the toll plaza. Investigators suspect that he misused his access to surveillance feeds not only for extortion but also for violating the privacy of unsuspecting citizens.
The case raises serious questions about surveillance protocols on India’s major highways and whether checks and balances exist to prevent such abuse.
Authorities Begin Investigation
Police sources say that the preliminary inquiry is underway, and multiple complaints have been verified. Officials from the expressway management have reportedly taken note and promised strict action once the investigation is complete.
Local residents are demanding immediate suspension, criminal charges, and a full audit of ATMS operations on the expressway.
