Chandigarh witnessed a high-voltage custody drama over the past two days, involving Punjab and Chandigarh Police over the arrest of Navneet Chaturvedi. The standoff finally ended on Wednesday evening after the Ropar court authorized Punjab Police to take him into custody.

According to official sources, Punjab Police arrested Chaturvedi in connection with the alleged forgery of signatures of 10 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs in the Rajya Sabha nomination papers. The case, which has triggered political ripples across Punjab, came to a head after days of tension between two police departments.
Punjab Police Moves After Court Order
For nearly 24 hours, Punjab Police officers were stationed outside Chandigarh’s Sector 3 Police Station, waiting for custody approval. Around 8:15 PM on Wednesday, following a court order from Ropar, Chandigarh Police finally handed over Chaturvedi to the Punjab team. He was immediately taken to Ropar for further legal proceedings.
This sequence of events followed an official order from the Ropar court, granting Punjab Police the right to arrest and investigate Chaturvedi in connection with the forged nomination papers case.
Chaturvedi Claimed Threat to Life
Earlier, Chaturvedi had written to Chandigarh Police on October 13, claiming that his life was under threat. In his letter, he requested protection until the completion of the Rajya Sabha elections. He alleged that the Punjab government was tapping his phone and monitoring his movements, adding that there was a serious threat to his life.
Owing to these claims, Chandigarh Police had initially refused to hand him over to Punjab Police, citing safety concerns.

The Aam Aadmi Party has alleged that the signatures on the nomination papers submitted by Navneet Chaturvedi were forged. According to AAP, Chaturvedi falsely represented himself as the national president of a political outfit named Janata Party and used fake signatures to file nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections.
Following these allegations, Punjab Assembly Speaker annulled his nomination, further deepening the controversy.
