Punjab Assembly Seeks Clarification from Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi on Political Allegiance After AAP Appointment

The political landscape of Punjab witnessed a fresh stir as the Punjab Vidhan Sabha formally asked rebel Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi to clarify his position following his appointment as the Vice President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The move has prompted serious questions about his continued role as an SAD MLA, despite his clear alignment with AAP for several months now.

Punjab Assembly Seeks Clarification from Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi on Political Allegiance After AAP Appointment

Dr. Sukhi, an ENT specialist by profession and a two-time MLA from Banga constituency, has been summoned to respond to a petition questioning his MLA status. The petition, filed by advocate H.C. Arora, seeks his disqualification under the anti-defection law, arguing that his formal induction and elevated role in AAP contradict his elected mandate under SAD.

According to Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi has been asked to submit a written reply by July 29. Speaking to the media, Sandhwan acknowledged that since Dr. Sukhi remains an active member of the Assembly, the matter requires official clarification.

Dr. Sukhi had joined AAP in August last year and was subsequently appointed Chairperson of the Punjab State Container and Warehousing Corporation, a position that carries the status of a Cabinet Minister. However, his latest appointment as Vice President of AAP has intensified the debate over his dual political affiliations.

The controversy emerges at a time when the Punjab Assembly is also preparing to observe the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur later this year. Speaker Sandhwan highlighted the importance of the upcoming events and revealed plans to engage with various social and academic sections of society, including Sikh scholars and institutions, to ensure the anniversary is commemorated with due respect and inclusivity.

When asked about the involvement of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in the planning of the anniversary events, the Speaker indicated openness to their participation, stating, “After all, the Guru and his legacy are common to all.”

As Punjab watches closely, Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi’s response and the decision of the Vidhan Sabha will not only set a political precedent but also reflect on the Assembly’s stance regarding party defection and loyalty in contemporary politics.
