PM Modi Responds to Constitution Debate: PM Narendra Modi delivers a scintillating speech in Lok Sabha in a debate marking the journey of 75 years of Indian Constitution. He reminded everyone on this momentous occasion about the democratic traditions of India, what the Constitution has given the nation, and the issues it has had to battle over the years.
In his address, PM Modi said, “For all of us, for all citizens and democracy-loving individuals across the world, this is a moment of great pride. It is time to celebrate 75 years of the Constitution, and I am glad Parliament is a part of it.”
The heated debates for two days between the opposition and the treasury benches ended with the Prime Minister’s response that talked about the historical milestones, constitutional values, and ongoing governmental initiatives to build a nation.
Without directly naming the Gandhi family, PM Modi accused a “Congress family” of undermining the Constitution. He said, “One family of Congress left no stone unturned in hurting the Constitution. Their wrong thoughts, wrong deeds, and wrong policies over the last decade were aimed at creating divisions instead of strengthening India’s unity.
He also referred to the imposition of the Emergency in 1975, stating, “The Constitution was torn apart when it was completing 25 years. It was one of the darkest chapters of our history.”
Unity in Diversity: A Key Constitutional Principle
PM Modi said that the diversity of India is the foundation of democratic success. “Our Constitution lays the foundation for India’s unity. Distorted mindsets after Independence led to attacks on the idea of unity in diversity. Celebrating our diversity is the biggest tribute to Babasaheb Ambedkar,” he said.
He further emphasized that India, with its thousands of years of democratic traditions, is not only the largest democracy but also the “mother of democracy.”
Women at the Core of Governance
Highlighting the progress made under his government, PM Modi said that women are now at the center of India’s growth story. “Women’s representation in Parliament and the Council of Ministers is increasing. Our Constitution gave women equal rights from the very beginning, which has helped shape their growing participation in governance and society.”
He gave the credit of strengthening India’s economic unity to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), acknowledging the contributions of previous governments in shaping the reform. He further expressed confidence in India’s future, saying, “Our country is moving forward rapidly and is on the path to becoming the third-largest economy in the world.
Earlier in the debate, Congress leaders attacked BJP and RSS ideologue VD Savarkar by suggesting that he considers ‘Manusmriti’ better than the constitution. In retaliation, PM Narendra Modi restated that constitution is the back-bone of united India and national progress.
The debate in the Lok Sabha was a part of broader celebrations for 75 years of the Constitution, which has guided India through its evolution as a modern democracy. PM Modi urged all citizens to cherish and uphold the Constitution, so that the values enshrined within it would continue to shape the nation for generations to come.
