Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport in the Jewar region of Gautam Buddha Nagar, marking a major milestone in India’s expanding aviation infrastructure. The mega project, often referred to as Jewar Airport, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across northern India while creating new opportunities for businesses, farmers, and young professionals.
The airport project, estimated at around ₹29,560 crore, is being developed in four phases and is considered one of the largest infrastructure developments in the country. Once fully operational, it will make Uttar Pradesh the first Indian state to have five international airports, further strengthening India’s position in the global aviation sector.
During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi described the airport as a symbol of India’s new confidence and development-driven mindset. He said the project reflects the nation’s determination to build world-class infrastructure despite global challenges. Referring to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Prime Minister highlighted how geopolitical tensions have affected the supply of essential commodities such as fuel, gas, food, and coal across the world. He noted that India relies on significant crude oil and gas imports from the region, but the government is taking every possible step to ensure that global disruptions do not become a burden on ordinary citizens or farmers.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that the strength of India lies in its people and that the country is working collectively to overcome global economic pressures. According to him, projects like the Noida International Airport demonstrate India’s commitment to long-term development and improved connectivity.
Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, welcomed the Prime Minister at the ceremony and described the airport as a historic moment for the state’s development. He said the project will take Uttar Pradesh’s growth to new heights and strengthen the state’s position on the global aviation map. The Chief Minister added that the airport will play a key role in boosting economic activity and supporting the state’s ambition of becoming a trillion-dollar economy.
The new airport has been designed as a modern multi-modal transport hub that will connect road, rail, and metro networks across the National Capital Region. This integrated infrastructure is expected to improve travel convenience and reduce congestion at the busy Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, which currently handles a significant portion of northern India’s air traffic.
Experts believe that the airport will act as a powerful catalyst for economic growth in the region. The development is expected to boost sectors such as logistics, hospitality, real estate, education, and healthcare. With improved connectivity and better infrastructure, western Uttar Pradesh could see increased investments and rapid urban expansion in the coming years.
Prime Minister Modi also noted that the airport will open new avenues for farmers, small traders, and youth in western Uttar Pradesh. Better cargo facilities and improved transportation links will help farmers and businesses reach national and international markets more efficiently.
The Noida International Airport project received initial approval from the central government in 2018 and has since progressed rapidly as part of India’s broader push to expand its aviation network. Once all four phases are completed, the airport is expected to become one of the largest in Asia with multiple runways, modern terminals, and large-scale cargo facilities.
With the inauguration of Phase 1, the airport now moves a step closer to becoming a major aviation hub for the National Capital Region and northern India.
