PM Modi assures protection of farmers and small industries amid US tariffs

Ahmedabad, Aug 25, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a strong message to the international community, especially the United States, and reaffirmed the Indian government’s commitment to protect the interests of farmers, livestock farmers and small industries even as Trump-era tariffs continue to impact trade ties.

PM Modi assures protection of farmers and small industries amid US tariffs

Speaking during his Gujarat visit, PM Modi emphasised that economic pressure may mount from global players, but the government will bear the brunt without harming India’s small entrepreneurs, farmers or local industries.

According to ANI, PM Modi said, “From this land of Ahmedabad, I want to assure our small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers and livestock farmers that our government will not let any harm come to you.”

US tariffs and India’s strategic response

The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when the US has imposed an additional 25% tariff on India and called it a “punishment” for continuing to buy Russian oil. These tariffs have raised concerns among Indian exporters and small industries dependent on international trade.

The Ministry of External Affairs clarified India’s position, saying that its imports are based on market dynamics and are aimed at ensuring energy security of 1.4 billion people. The ministry also expressed disappointment at the US decision and stressed that other countries too engage in similar energy transactions without any penalty.

Modi’s commitment to farmers and fishermen

Prime Minister Modi’s remarks echo his long-standing policy of prioritising India’s agriculture and rural sectors. During his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort, he had declared:

“If any policy harms India’s farmers, fishermen or livestock farmers, Modi stands like a wall against it.”

The statement reinforces the government’s promise to ensure the security of agriculture, small industries and rural livelihoods amid international trade pressures.

Projects worth ₹5,400 crore launched in Gujarat

During his two-day visit to Gujarat, PM Modi inaugurated projects worth ₹5,400 crore and highlighted the government’s efforts to boost infrastructure and employment in the state. He was warmly welcomed by Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel at the Ahmedabad airport.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said:

“India is empowered by the teachings of Lord Krishna and Mahatma Gandhi. In the last 11 years, 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty. Our government is committed to providing a dignified standard of living to all citizens.”

A strong message to the global community

As India faces international economic pressures, PM Modi’s statement is a clear message that the country will prioritise the welfare of its citizens over external pressures. By balancing trade, energy security and farmer protection, the government aims to maintain economic stability and social welfare simultaneously.
