PM Modi Advocates for International AI Regulation in Paris Summit

International AI Regulation:- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for collective global efforts to establish governance frameworks and standards for artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI would serve the greater good of the world while speaking at the Paris AI Action Summit he co-chaired with French President Emmanuel Macron, where India’s expertise in, and its commitment to, making development of AI responsible and inclusive were also emphasized.

Addressing world leaders, Prime Minister Modi spoke on the urgent need for AI governance that protects common values, deals with future risks, and develops trust in technology. The PM said AI is changing very fast and might eventually determine what will happen in the future about humans. “India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that the AI future is for good, and for all,” he said, adding that India is developing its own large language model to cater to its diverse population.

Modi emphasized India’s unique AI ecosystem that is built on the model of public-private partnership, which allows the quantity of resources available in terms of computing power for making it available in affordable quantities to startups and researchers. Here, he defined AI as a tool writing the code for humanity and how it was progressing at an unprecedented pace. He, however, cautioned that humanity must control its development.

As regards the perils of AI developing beyond human intelligence, the Prime Minister repeated his call for a global governance framework that ensures AI remains an enabler and not a threat. “There is a need for collective global efforts to establish governance and standards that uphold our shared values, address risks, and build trust,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Global South, Modi underlined that AI governance is not just a matter of risk and rivalry management but, above all, of innovation and accessibility. “Governance is also about accessing it by all, especially in the Global South.”. It is where the capacities are most lacking—be it compute power, talent, data, or financial resources, he said, recalling how India, during its G20 presidency, built a consensus on “harnessing AI responsibly, for good, and for all.”

PM Modi also emphasized India’s leadership in AI adoption and its commitment to techno-legal solutions for data privacy. He highlighted AI’s transformative potential in fields such as healthcare, education, and agriculture, urging for the development of open-source systems to enhance transparency and trust. “We must build quality data sets free from biases, democratize technology, and create people-centric applications,” he added.

In response to these measures, the Prime Minister expressed the need for robust measures to eliminate the risks presented by cybersecurity, disinformation, and deepfakes. He also aimed to emphasize the success of India’s effort in building a cost-effective digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people, positing the country as a model for inclusive technological development.

PM Modi in his speech at the Paris AI Action Summit renewed India’s commitment to playing a key role in shaping global AI governance, so that AI would remain a force for positive transformation and equitable growth worldwide.
