Paytm UPI to continue without interruption even after August 31: Company clarifies on Google Play alert

Paytm UPI Digital payments giant Paytm has assured its users that UPI transactions will continue without interruption even after August 31, although a recent notification issued by Google Play had created confusion among customers.

Paytm UPI to continue without interruption even after August 31

The Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led fintech company clarified that the update is only for recurring payments like subscriptions and does not impact one-time UPI transactions.

Why the confusion

Recently, Google Play issued an alert stating that @paytm UPI handles will not be accepted from August 31, 2025, causing panic among users. The notification was related to the deadline for updating recurring mandates as per the guidelines of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Google’s alert led many users to think that Paytm UPI would stop working completely. However, Paytm has now confirmed that UPI payments will remain fully operational for both consumers and merchants.

Paytm’s clarification on UPI handle change

Paytm said that users who have set up auto-debit subscriptions for services like YouTube Premium, Google One storage or OTT platforms using their old @paytm UPI handle will simply need to update their recurring payment method.

The company has introduced new bank-linked UPI handles, such as:

  • @pthdfc (HDFC Bank)
  • @ptaxis (Axis Bank)
  • @ptyes (Yes Bank)
  • @ptsbi (SBI)

For example, if the UPI ID was ravi@paytm, it will now become ravi@pthdfc or ravi@ptsbi depending on the user’s bank.

Paytm said in its statement, “This is a smooth migration to ensure seamless recurring payments. Regular UPI payments through Paytm will remain completely unaffected.”

What users need to do

If you are a Paytm UPI user, here are the steps to ensure smooth transactions after August 31:

  • Update recurring essentials: Change your subscription payment UPI ID from @paytm to the new bank-linked handle (@pthdfc, @ptsbi, etc.)
  • Continue one-time UPI transactions: Regular payments like purchases, transfers and bill payments through Paytm will work as normal.
  • Opt if needed: You can also set up recurring payments through Google Pay, PhonePe or debit/credit cards if you wish.

NPCI approval and Paytm’s change

This change comes after NPCI approved Paytm to act as a third-party application provider (TPAP). By migrating to the new UPI handle, Paytm ensures compliance with NPCI guidelines as well as provides secure and seamless digital payment services to users.

Summary

Although the Google Play notification created unnecessary panic, Paytm has clarified that there will be no disruption in daily UPI payments. Only users with recurring subscriptions will have to make minor changes to their payment settings.

So, whether you are paying at a shop, transferring money or scanning a QR code, Paytm UPI will continue to work seamlessly even after August 31.
