Panchkula, May 20: In a heart-wrenching incident that shook the Panchkula Police Department, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anil Kumar (44) lost his life after his car was hit by a recklessly driven white Volvo SUV near Sector 27, late Sunday night.

According to the police and eyewitness accounts, ASI Anil Kumar, who was posted at District Police Lines, Panchkula, was returning home after completing his duty when the tragic accident occurred.

The FIR was lodged based on a statement by his son, Aneesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 27. Aneesh was out on a walk near Om Hospital at around 10:10 PM when he witnessed the SUV speeding and ramming into another car at the Sector 26 turn leading towards Sector 27. To his horror, he later found that it was his father’s vehicle that had been struck.

Anil Kumar was immediately rushed to Ojas Hospital in Sector 26, but despite efforts by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning.

The accused driver, identified as Ashok Kumar from Gharaunda, abandoned the Volvo at the accident site and fled, said the police. The vehicle has been seized and forensic analysis is underway.

A senior police officer confirmed that intensive raids are being conducted to arrest the absconding driver. “We are gathering all possible CCTV footage and witness statements to trace Ashok Kumar’s movements,” he added.

ASI Anil Kumar was known for his dedication and discipline in the force. Colleagues described him as soft-spoken, responsible, and always willing to help fellow officers.

His untimely death has cast a pall of gloom over the Panchkula Police Department. A wreath-laying ceremony is expected to be held in his honor later this week.
