Pune: Nine killed in tragic road accident in Narayangaon

At least nine people died in a tragic road accident in the Narayangaon area of Pune on Friday morning. The mishap occurred at around 10 AM when a speeding tempo rammed into a mini-van, causing a chain reaction which led to the van crashing into a stationary bus.

According to eye-witness accounts, the mini-van was on its way to Narayangaon when a speeding tempo hit it from behind. The impact made the driver of the van lose control and hit a bus parked at the side of the road. The force of the crashes was so immense that the van was severely mangled, making rescue operations difficult.

Local authorities have reported nine deaths thus far, but more may be recorded as some of the injured patients are said to be in a critical condition. Emergency services- police and ambulances responded immediately to the scene after reports reached them.

The injured have been taken to the nearest hospitals immediately, where the medical teams are working hard for their treatment. The families of the victims have been informed and local administration officials are providing the necessary assistance there.

“I heard a loud crash and saw people rushing toward the scene. It was devastating. The van was completely wrecked, and there were injured people crying for help,” said a local resident who witnessed the incident.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest overspeeding and possible negligence on the part of the tempo driver as contributing factors. Efforts are underway to identify the victims and notify their families.

It once again brought forth the need for stringent traffic regulation and adherence to speed limits. Narayangaon residents called upon the authorities to take some steps to ensure such accidents would not recur, which include better signage on the road and stricter checking of speeding vehicles.

This heart-wrenching accident is an eye-opener to life’s fragility and critical importance of road safety. Authorities as well as citizens need to collaborate so that this type of tragedy doesn’t recur again.
