Mumbai witnessed a tragic accident on Saturday afternoon when a portion of an under-construction metro pillar collapsed in Mulund, north-east Mumbai, killing one person and injuring three others. The incident occurred at around 12:15 PM near the Johnson and Johnson factory on the busy LBS Road. According to fire brigade officials, a cement slab from the pillar fell on a passing autorickshaw, completely crushing the vehicle. A car nearby was also heavily damaged in the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav. Three others were injured: Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav (45) is in critical condition and admitted to the ICU, while Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52) and Deepa Ruhiya (40) are reported to be stable. The Mumbai fire brigade and emergency services promptly reached the site to assist the victims and clear the debris.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that a portion of the parapet segment of the under-construction metro Line 4 collapsed near pier 196, in close coordination with the Mulund Fire Station. “The Metro project team is at the site, working on relief operations and securing the site in coordination with BMC and disaster management authorities. An investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the collapse,” the MMRDA said in a statement.
Mumbai Metro Line 4 is an under-construction route connecting Wadala in south-central Mumbai to Thane, passing over key areas such as Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, and Mulund. The project has faced scrutiny in the past due to traffic congestion and construction-related safety concerns.
Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad criticized the state government, questioning whether residents’ lives had become “so cheap.” In her social media post, she highlighted concerns about public safety and rushed construction. “While development is necessary, it should not come at the cost of citizens’ lives,” she said, calling for accountability and strict action against those responsible.
This tragic incident has reignited concerns about construction safety standards in Mumbai’s metro projects. Experts warn that such accidents underline the need for stringent quality checks and proper safety measures, especially in high-traffic areas. Authorities have assured the public that relief operations are ongoing and an investigation is underway to prevent any future mishaps.
The key highlights of the incident are: a portion of an under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 4 pillar collapsed in Mulund, killing one person and injuring three others, with one in critical condition; the accident occurred near the Johnson and Johnson factory on LBS Road; the MMRDA is conducting a detailed investigation and coordinating with BMC to secure the site; Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad demanded accountability, highlighting public safety concerns; and the incident raises questions about construction safety and technical standards in fast-paced urban projects.
