Mohali News: A two-storied under-construction showroom in TDI City, Sector 118 Mohali, collapsed on Monday afternoon, leaving a labourer dead and three others injured. The accident happened at around 4:30 pm when the lintel of the second floor was being laid.

The deceased has been identified as Jaswinder Singh (41), a resident of Chuhar Majra near Landran. Among the injured are Uday Paswan (42), Karan Kumar (30), and Kuldeep Paswan (25), all residents of Aerocity. The injured were rescued and admitted to the Phase-6 Civil Hospital, where one is reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Witnesses reported that the lintel of the second floor gave way under the weight, burying six workers underneath the debris. A few workers jumped off the structure, sustaining minor injuries. Local residents raised an alarm, and the rescue operation followed promptly.

Tehsildar Arjun Grewal and SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh supervised the rescue efforts at the site. The absence of the site supervisor during the incident has raised questions about safety protocols.

Residents of the area alleged that overloading and inadequate support structures caused the collapse. “In such cases, it’s always the poor labourers who pay the price, while contractors and building owners escape accountability,” said a local resident.

The officials assured that an in-depth probe would be done. “An inquiry has been ordered, and a technical committee is already probing the December 21 collapse in Sohana. That report will be submitted soon,” said Tehsildar Arjun Grewal.

This is the second building collapse in Mohali in less than a month. On December 21, a three-storey gym-cum-PG facility in Sohana collapsed during unauthorized digging in an adjacent plot, claiming two lives. Repeated incidents raise concerns about lax enforcement of building safety norms. Locals are demanding strict action against careless contractors and stringent checks on construction practices to avoid more such tragedies.

The authorities have promised action, strictly in line with the inquiry findings, but the question of accountability hangs large as another family mourns the loss of a loved one.

Viraj S. Tidke, Additional Deputy Commissioner, assured to investigate the reasons behind the collapse. Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu confirmed the rescue operation has been completed while police investigations continue. This has been compared with the December 21 collapse of a gym-cum-PG accommodation in Sohana, where illegal digging in the adjacent plot led to the deaths of two youths. After that tragedy, building owners Parvinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh were arrested for culpable homicide, and a magisterial probe was ordered, with the report expected soon. Officials stated that a technical committee is already examining the Sohana incident in detail, with findings likely to be submitted shortly.
