A senior police officer said the attacks started in Sanasabi village around 10:45 am in the morning and the nearby areas where armed attackers from the hilltops fired indiscriminately and hurled bombs, leaving people to scurry for safety. Within no time, security forces deployed in the area also retaliated and started engaging the attackers in a shoot-out.
A similar incident took place at around 11:30 am in Thamnapokpi village, causing more pandemonium among the residents. “The armed men launched attacks in Thamnapokpi as well, but the security forces, including the CRPF personnel, sprang into action, saving many women, children, and elderly people who came in the way,” said the police official.
The chief minister also highlighted the role of BJP in restoring peace in the state amid the unrest. N. Biren Singh spoke to media earlier on Friday while he reiterated his commitment to the party and urged unity for ending ethnic violence.
“Only the BJP can save Manipur. We are committed to reality-based politics that benefits the nation,” Singh said. He underlined the essence of social justice and the dialogue in solving the ongoing conflict. While addressing people opposing the government’s endeavors, he said, “Certain elements trying to break the state are questioning our actions, driven by hunger for power.”
The ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has been claimed to have taken more than 250 lives and displaced thousands in its wake since it broke out in May last year. Despite various measures undertaken, tensions remain high in the state.
These attacks have been precipitated by yet another threatening incident wherein a live bomb was found near CM Biren Singh’s residence. Security forces are investigating the issue.
While the situation in Manipur is going worse day after day, the government along with security forces is escalating efforts to ensure that there is no disturbance of law and order but simultaneously take care of residents.
