Prayagraj, February 2: 30 devotees died in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya. Authorities believe there is a conspiracy behind the tragic incident and law enforcement agencies are conducting a detailed probe into the crime.
Apart from central intelligence agencies, teams of the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Special Task Force (STF) are also looking for the group of youths who are believed to have instigated the chaos.
To gather vital clues, ATS and STF officials are questioning vendors selling religious offerings, bangles and other items at the fair. Security has been beefed up in the Maha Kumbh Mela area to avoid any further mishap. Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order Amitabh Yash has camped in Prayagraj to monitor the situation.
The Director General of Police (DGP) assured that a thorough investigation is being carried out from all angles regarding the tragedy. He said, “We are scanning the surrounding CCTV footage and drone recordings. Right now our priority is to ensure that the remaining Amrit Snan rituals are conducted safely and smoothly. The investigation will be intensified once the situation stabilises.” Officials have appealed to the devotees to remain calm and follow the safety guidelines so that they can stay safe during the Maha Kumbh Mela.
