Ludhiana, June 23, 2025:

Ludhiana West Bypoll Result 2025 LIVE: AAP's Sanjeev Arora Maintains Lead Over Congress

The bypoll, held on June 19, witnessed a voter turnout of 51.33%, significantly lower than the 64% recorded during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. The counting of votes began at 8:00 am today at the Khalsa College for Women amid tight security and a massive police presence to ensure peace and transparency.

Round-Wise Vote Count Summary (Till Round 7):

  • AAP – Sanjeev Arora: 17,358 votes
  • Congress – Bharat Bhushan Ashu: 14,086 votes
  • BJP – Jiwan Gupta: 11,839 votes
  • SAD – Parupkar Singh Ghuman: 3,705 votes

After seven rounds, Arora leads Ashu by a margin of 3,272 votes, solidifying AAP’s stronghold in the constituency. Interestingly, BJP’s Jiwan Gupta, who briefly overtook Congress in the third round, has now slipped to the third position.

Who Is Sanjeev Arora?

Sanjeev Arora is a Rajya Sabha MP and a prominent industrialist based in Ludhiana. Known for his philanthropic initiatives and business acumen, Arora was handpicked by the AAP leadership to contest the seat left vacant by the untimely demise of MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January 2025.

Tough Battle for Congress and BJP

Congress fielded Bharat Bhushan Ashu, a senior leader, former minister, and Punjab Congress working president, hoping to regain lost ground in the region. Despite a steady start, Ashu has been trailing Arora consistently since the first round.

The BJP, represented by Jiwan Gupta, a veteran and member of the party’s Punjab core committee, initially showed surprising momentum. However, by the fifth round, the BJP fell behind, with votes consolidating mainly in favor of AAP and Congress.

Shiromani Akali Dal Struggles to Keep Pace

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate, Parupkar Singh Ghuman, a respected lawyer and former Ludhiana Bar Association President, has remained in fourth place throughout the counting. With less than 4,000 votes so far, the SAD seems unable to make a meaningful impact in this bypoll.

Voting and Counting Overview

A total of 14 candidates contested the Ludhiana West bypoll. The election was conducted in a peaceful manner, with the district administration and Punjab Police deploying heavy security, especially around the counting centre.

Counting is being held in 14 rounds, and with seven rounds completed, trends show a strong likelihood of a comfortable win for the AAP. Final results, however, are still awaited.

Why This Seat Matters

Ludhiana West has long been considered a politically sensitive and high-profile seat. AAP’s performance here is being seen as a litmus test of the Bhagwant Mann government’s popularity in urban Punjab, especially as it battles criticism over governance and law & order issues.

A win here would not only reaffirm AAP’s urban hold but also deal a major blow to the Congress, which has been hoping for a resurgence after its 2022 defeat.

As the counting inches toward completion, AAP looks poised to retain Ludhiana West, with Sanjeev Arora riding high on a strong lead. The final tally will confirm whether the voters of Ludhiana have once again placed their trust in Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP or if a twist awaits in the final rounds.
