Advani, who is a towering figure in Indian politics, is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital under the care of Dr. Vinit Suri, a senior consultant in neurology. According to reports, this is his second hospitalization at Apollo Hospital this year. However, the specific reason for his latest admission has not been disclosed.

L.K. Advani was born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi which is today a part of undivided India. He became part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of 14. After the Partition took place in 1947, L.K. Advani moved with his family to India. In 1951, he became a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Advani entered the Rajya Sabha in 1970 and also became the president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, elected in 1972.

During the Emergency period, 1975–77, which was declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Advani, with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was imprisoned. After the Janata Party formed the government in 1977 under Morarji Desai, Advani became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, in which he implemented major changes in India’s media scenario.

Spearheading the BJP’s Success

In 1980, Advani played a pivotal role in founding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the Bharatiya Jana Sangh disbanded. Under his leadership, the BJP grew from a fledgling party with just two seats in the 1984 general elections to a dominant force in Indian politics by the 1990s.

Advani’s leadership in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, which sought the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, helped shape the identity of the BJP and increase its popularity. He was president of the party three times and held key portfolios: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government.

Advani was declared the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2009 general elections. Although the party did not win, his stature in Indian politics remained uncontested. He stepped back from active politics over the years but is still considered one of the founding pillars of the BJP and a guiding force in its evolution.

As the nation keeps a watchful eye on the health of one of its most iconic leaders, wishes for his speedy recovery have been pouring in from all quarters.
