Washington DC/Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, Koyyada Ravi Teja, a 26-year-old student from Hyderabad, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Washington Avenue in the United States on Sunday. The victim, originally from Green Hills Colony in Rama Krishna Puram, Hyderabad, had moved to the US in 2022 to pursue his master’s degree and was preparing for a promising career.

The preliminary reports have revealed that it happened when Koyyada Ravi Teja was returning home. On Monday morning, his family in Hyderabad came to know that Teja received fatal bullet injuries and died on the spot. Koyyada Chandra Mouli, father of the young hero, spoke out about his feelings on losing the young son. He stated, “He went to the US with high hopes, and see how he is returning.” Details Awaited

The shooting may be an untold incident with the unknown surrounding it, but his friends and family are extremely distraught with the event. “Nobody should face this situation. He was full of dreams and determination,” said one of Teja’s friends, recalling his aspirations.

Koyyada Ravi Teja had recently graduated and was going on interviews, preparing to start his career. The tragic loss of Teja has darkened the Indian students and professionals community in the US under a veil of mourning.

This is not the first attack on Indian nationals in the US. Last November, another Indian student, 22-year-old Sai Teja Nukarapu from Khammam, Telangana, was shot dead at a gas station near Chicago while working there.

Earlier in June 2023, the death of 32-year-old Indian student Dasari Gopikrishna occurred, who was shot at a grocery store where he was working after an alleged robbery incident at Pleasant Grove, Dallas.

A spate of violent incidents targeting Indian nationals in the US has alarmed the diaspora. It has resulted in pleas by the families and groups for action to ensure safety on international student exchange and workers programmes.

Ravi Teja’s family awaits the return of the body and detailed reports. However, it acts as a grim reminder of what an immigrant is at the receiving end while living outside their home.
