  • She faces a salary burden of ₹15 lakh despite losses.
  • Himachal floods have killed 424 people since June 20, SDMA reports.

Monsoon Devastation Hits Himachal’s Economy

Himachal Pradesh has been battling the devastating impact of continuous rainfall, landslides, and flash floods that have brought normal life to a halt. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the death toll since June 20 has risen to 424, including 242 deaths from rain-related incidents and 182 from road accidents linked to the harsh monsoon season.

Mandi, the very district Ranaut represents in Parliament, has been among the worst-hit regions. At least three members of a family lost their lives this week after torrential rains triggered landslides and flash floods in the area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently conducted an aerial survey of the disaster-affected regions, including Mandi and Kullu, to assess the situation and relief operations.

Kangana’s Restaurant ‘The Mountain Story’

Earlier this year, Kangana Ranaut launched her restaurant, The Mountain Story, in Mandi, promoting it as a place serving authentic Himachali cuisine. However, like many local businesses, it has suffered massive losses due to the flood-induced disruption in tourism and daily life.

“I also have a restaurant here. Yesterday, I only did ₹50 worth of business. I have salaries of ₹15 lakh to pay. Please understand my pain too, I am human as well,” Ranaut said in her statement, highlighting the financial burden she continues to face.

Criticism Over Her Absence

Even as she voiced her personal struggles, criticism mounted over Ranaut’s limited presence in the flood-hit district. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s media advisor, Naresh Chauhan, questioned the MP’s visibility during the crisis, saying, “It is unfortunate that during such a calamity, the elected representative is not among her people.”

Locals in Mandi also expressed resentment, with some protesters waving black flags and chanting slogans like “Go back Kangana, you are late,” reported PTI.

A State in Crisis

The monsoon fury has not only destroyed infrastructure but also disrupted livelihoods across Himachal Pradesh. From small shop owners to larger businesses, the economic blow has been widespread. For Kangana Ranaut, the struggle of running a newly launched café amid such devastation reflects the larger hardships faced by thousands of local residents.
