New Delhi – The Supreme Court has strongly condemned the spread of misinformation and rumors regarding the recent fire at the official residence of Delhi High Court judge, Justice Yashwant Varma. Reports had surfaced alleging that a large stash of cash was recovered from his residence after the incident, leading to widespread speculation. However, the apex court clarified that these claims are misleading and unverified.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Supreme Court emphasized that the proposed transfer of Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court was an entirely separate matter and had no connection with the ongoing in-house inquiry. The court made it clear that decisions regarding judicial transfers are taken independently, based on administrative considerations, and should not be linked to any other proceedings.
In-House Inquiry Already Underway
Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice DK Upadhyaya, had promptly initiated an in-house inquiry upon learning about the incident. The process, which began even before the Supreme Court collegium’s meeting on March 20, involves gathering evidence and relevant information regarding the matter. The Chief Justice is expected to submit his findings to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna later today.
The Supreme Court reassured that once the examination of the report is complete, necessary and appropriate actions will be taken as per due process.
SC Urges Caution Against Speculation
Reiterating its stance, the Supreme Court urged the public and media to refrain from engaging in speculation and rumor-mongering. It warned against spreading unverified claims that could tarnish reputations and undermine trust in the judiciary. The apex court underscored that the justice system follows a structured process to ensure fairness and accountability, and unnecessary sensationalism should not cloud the facts.
As the investigation progresses, all eyes will be on the findings of the in-house inquiry and the subsequent actions of the judiciary. For now, the Supreme Court’s firm statement serves as a reminder to rely on factual information rather than unverified narratives.
