Saketh Sreenivasaiah, a 22-year-old Indian postgraduate student studying at the University of California, Berkeley, has been found dead in the United States days after he was reported missing. The heartbreaking confirmation came from the Indian Consulate in San Francisco, bringing a tragic end to an intense search that had gripped both the Indian community and university circles.

Originally from Karnataka, Saketh was pursuing a Master of Science degree at UC Berkeley. He had been missing since Monday, prompting growing concern among his friends, classmates, and family back home in India. Local authorities had earlier urged the public to share any information that could help trace him.
During the search, his backpack was reportedly discovered on a doorstep in the Park Hills neighbourhood of Berkeley. The bag contained his passport and laptop, deepening fears about his safety and triggering a wider investigation. Police intensified their efforts after the discovery, but hopes of finding him safe faded when authorities later confirmed the recovery of his body.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Consulate expressed deep sorrow over the development. Officials extended their condolences to Saketh’s family and assured them of full assistance during this difficult period. The mission confirmed that its officers are in direct contact with the family and are coordinating with local authorities to complete necessary formalities.
Arrangements are being made to repatriate Saketh’s mortal remains to India at the earliest. The consulate has pledged to provide all required support, including documentation and logistical coordination, to ensure the process is handled smoothly.
The academic community at UC Berkeley is said to be in shock. Friends have described Saketh as a focused and ambitious student who had travelled abroad with dreams of building a strong career. His sudden death has left classmates struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected once official procedures are completed.
