India Russia Relations: — In a significant show of solidarity, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express Russia’s full support in India’s fight against terrorism, following the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The call highlights the growing strength of the India-Russia strategic partnership amidst rising global concerns over cross-border terrorism.
During the telephonic conversation, President Putin strongly condemned the heinous Pahalgam attack and offered his deepest condolences for the loss of innocent lives. He emphasized that the perpetrators and their supporters must be brought to justice, reaffirming Russia’s firm stand against terrorism in all its forms.
India-Russia Solidarity Against Terrorism
Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, shared the development via social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He quoted President Putin as saying that Russia stands firmly with India during this difficult time.
“Putin strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice,” Jaiswal wrote.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Prime Minister Modi also took the opportunity to congratulate President Putin on the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, commemorated on May 9. He extended a formal invitation for the annual India-Russia Summit scheduled to be held later this year in India.
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to further deepen the special and privileged strategic partnership, which remains a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy and regional diplomacy.
India Demands Justice, Russia Urges Diplomacy
Earlier on May 2, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had spoken with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, firmly asserting that the perpetrators, backers, and planners of the Pahalgam attack must face justice.
Sharing details of the conversation on social media, Jaishankar wrote,
“Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice.”
In response, the Russian Embassy in New Delhi released a statement acknowledging the deterioration in India-Pakistan relations post-attack. Lavrov urged both nations to resolve their issues through bilateral diplomatic and political channels, in line with the Simla Agreement (1972) and the Lahore Declaration (1999).
What Happened in Pahalgam?
The Pahalgam terror attack claimed several innocent lives, once again exposing the threat of cross-border terrorism. The Indian government has intensified diplomatic efforts to mobilize international support, ensuring those behind the attack face consequences.
The phone call from President Putin marks a strong diplomatic backing for India at a crucial moment. As India mourns the victims of the Pahalgam attack, it finds a reliable partner in Russia, with both nations pledging to uphold peace, justice, and regional stability.
